Today is Sunday. If it were another day of the week, we would be celebrating the feast of Blessed Dominic (Barberi) of the Mother of God, who brought the Passionists to England and later received John Henry Newman into the Catholic Church. Father Gary at The Passionist Charism has a series of posts on Blessed Dominic, one of which has a fine quotation from Cardinal Bourne, who was Archbishop of Westminster in the early years of the twentieth century:
Of all the preachers of the divine Word who have worked for the salvation of souls in England, there is no one – in our opinion – to whom we are more indebted than the Servant of God, Dominic of the Mother of God. I should consider myself happy if I had the power and right to dedicate this whole Diocese to his care and protection and be allowed to honour him as our Patron and Protector in England.
Perhaps Cardinal Bourne’s desire will be fulfilled when Dominic is canonised!
You can read some writings of Blessed Dominic and his saintly companion Father Ignatius Spencer here
I am interested in the Cause for Teresa Higginson, whom Blessed Dominic nursed as a child in Gainsborough and in fact, Baptised her sister Louisa. Fr. Ignatius Spencer also visited and used to call Teresa his ‘Little Apostle’.
I understand Fr. Urban Young was interested in her Cause and I wonder if youk know of any reference to her in his writings. I do have Fr. Ben Lodge’s C.T.S. booklet, but there is no mention there and Fr. Lodge hasn’t encountered any reference to her during his work as Postulator for Fr. Spencer’s Cause.
I apologise for intruding with this query and thank you for even taking the trouble to read it.
I hope to attend one of the September Masses ‘In Memory of Fr. Ignatius’.
Many Thanks.
Margaret Rainford.
Many thanks for an excellent website.
Margaret
I’m not aware of any reference to Teresa in the writings of Father Urban. Teresa’s Cause was introduced in 1935 in Liverpool, just a few years after Father Urban published his books on Blessed Dominic and Father Ignatius Spencer. The French edition of the Life of Teresa Higginson has a number of photographs, including some of Blessed Dominic and Father Ignatius.
I wonder who the current postulator is.
