Today, most of the Capitulars have gone to Monte Argentario (left), first home of the Passionists. The Retreat of the Presentation (below) was opened by Saint Paul of the Cross in 1737. There are also hermitages on the mountain where he and his companions lived before the Retreat was built. The other Passionist monastery on Monte Argentario is the Retreat of Saint Joseph, which Paul built as a novitiate in the 1760s.
I didn’t go with the group, as I had to stay here to finish off a text which the redaction committe has to give to the Chapter tomorrow morning. Since I was there last June, I was quite happy to stay in Rome and do what had to be done. I also need to start writing a homily for Wednesday which, like everything else, will have to go to the translators.
